Scott & White urology patients receive new pain management therapy

- New technology helps reduce operating room procedures -

TEMPLE, Texas – The Department of Urology at Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple became the first urology specialists in the U.S., and in Texas, to use a new Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved pain control technology for urology patients.  Patients who require pain management following their procedures can now receive analgesia through new, non-invasive inhalation therapy.

"Urology procedures can be an uncomfortable and painful experience for the patient,"said Erin Travis Bird, MD, director for the Division of Urology. "We wanted to offer an alternative treatment in a clinic setting that would reduce pain and help patients recover faster after their procedure."

In 2012, the FDA Safety & Innovation Act (FDASIA) approved the medical use of nitrous oxide (N2O) for analgesia. Until now, patients have had to endure some procedures in the urology clinic without pain relief, or receive heavy sedation in the operating room.  By blending N2O with oxygen (O2) and administering through a gas mixer system, patients can now receive pain relief quickly and simply in the clinic by breathing through a mask  --  no injections, atomizers, or IV infusions.  The gas mixer system, called the SEDARA® Gas Mixer System, can be used for minimal to moderate pain management in support of outpatient cases conducted outside the hospital operating room.

"Improving quality patient care and the patient experience continues to be our goal," said Dr. Bird. "Taking advantage of innovative technologies directly benefits our patients."

The urology clinic at Scott & White Memorial Hospital - Temple is the only hospital in Texas to offer this pain management technology from Linde, the creators of the SEDARA® Gas Mixer System.  Since August 31, Scott & White has performed 17 successful procedures using this new technology.
