Breast Cancer Support Services
Patient Navigator Program
Scott & White Breast Cancer Clinic offers you the only Patient Navigator Program in Central Texas. The program is designed to assist you with appointment scheduling, navigation throughout the Scott & White system, and any other help you may need in the first few weeks after diagnosis.
With the Patient Navigator Program, you’ll first meet with a nurse who will talk with you about what resources are available to you at Scott & White.
Your nurse will then set you up with a Patient Ambassador (a breast cancer survivor or caregiver with a heart for care), who will then meet with you regularly to help you make the process of cancer management less difficult.
Patient Ambassadors, trained by the American Cancer Society in handling psychosocial issues, will help you with the following:
- Assist nursing staff in finding out what you need regarding comfort and care
- Answer your questions and help allay fears
- Guide you to available resources
- Staff the product store
- Visit with you in the treatment room
- Sit with those who are alone
- Assist in making phone calls and appointments
- Listen when you need it most
The Patient Ambassadors are your allies at Scott & White. With the Patient Navigator Program, we want to reduce the distress associated with a diagnosis of cancer.
Our Patient Navigator Program is one of the first in the nation to use patient volunteers because patient volunteers “have been there.” They know what it’s like to experience a diagnosis of cancer. They know the feelings and the concerns. They know what needs to be done.
As part of our community outreach, our Patient Navigator Program extends into the surrounding areas. We have volunteers in various local towns. Our Patient Ambassadors come to you. If you need to talk, they’ll meet you at your neighborhood coffee shop or in your home, so that you don’t have to drive to Temple.
The Scott & White Breast Cancer Clinic sponsors breast cancer support groups in Central Texas. These support groups are an extension of the medical care you receive at Scott & White, and can sometimes serve as a cathartic opportunity for you to grieve, share and rejoice in other’s milestones.
Scott & White nurses attend the meetings to help field medical questions. In addition, we often feature guest speakers — physicians who present the latest information on cancer treatments or technology, and field general questions.
