Clean Catch Urine Collection

The clean catch urine collection method is a way to collect a urine sample for laboratory testing. The collection method includes:

  • Cleaning the genital area.

  • Collecting midstream urine. It is important to catch the middle part of the urine flow.

  • Securing the sample for laboratory testing.

Using a clean catch method reduces the chance that other bacteria and fluids from the genital area are collected in the urine sample. Many tests may be performed on the urine sample to help you and your caregiver determine appropriate treatment options. Tell your caregiver if you have taken antibiotics recently. This can alter some test results. The clean catch collection method varies slightly for men, women, and infants.
