Gastrointestinal Radiology

GI RadiologyGI Radiology at Scott & White comprises three months of fluorscopic rotations, with other GI radiology topics covered during other modality rotations such as ultrasound and body CT. Two residents are assigned to fluoroscopic responsibilities, which typically begin at 8:00 a.m. Each resident is responsible for either the fluoroscopy schedule, each with a staff to advise and help with the workload. Fluoroscopic exams are performed continuously until the schedule is completed, followed by a read-out session with staff. This process is usually completed by lunch time, with the afternoons available for scheduled studies such as modified barium swallows, T-tube cholangiograms, fistulagrams, ERCP's and other add-on studies. Outside films and helping with the plain film stack are also among the duties of the GI resident. The resident covering female fluoroscopy also assists Ob-Gyn staff with hysterosalpingograms. The case volume and variety provide excellent exposure to both common and uncommon GI pathology.

First-year residents are trained in fluoroscopic technique by both staff and senior residents, who assist with fluoroscopy during the first two months of each year.

In March 2003, we installed three new Philips Digital R&F rooms each with 16" image intensifiers to provide current digital fluoroscopic experience for residents on this rotation. These are installed in the spacious rooms of the new departmental expansion in Radiology.
