Welcome from L. Gill Naul, M.D., Chairman for Radiology

Dr. Gill Naul

Scott & White is a large multi-specialty group practice with over 800 staff physicians serving as a quaternary healthcare system for much of Central Texas and surrounding areas as well as distant locations. Scott & White is affiliated with the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine. Temple serves as the clinical campus for the College of Medicine. There is a significant graduate medical education commitment and as of 2009 there were 381 residents and fellows in Temple.

The Department of Radiology is an integral component of this healthcare system with over 49 physicians and scientists in the department as of 2009. Over 520,000 exams were performed by the Department of Radiology this past year. The Department is fully staffed with all subspecialties represented. Many of the staff did portions of their training at various prestigious institutions around the country. The Department of Radiology has recently completed a massive multi-year, multi-phase expansion and renovation project. The MRI, fluoroscopy and radiography areas are all either new or recently renovated. Renovations of Interventional Radiology and Mammography have also been completed. Three 64 slice multi-detector CT's and a dual source CT are operating in the main facility. A 3 Tesla MRI unit was installed in October 2004 with a second 3T MRI install in December 2008. There are also two 1.5 T MR systems at the main facility. An additional four high-field MR units are in our system. A fixed PET/CT (16 slice) scanner was installed several years ago. Four new angiography units including two biplane units have also been installed in interventional radiology.

The PACS system is fully operational and and prior studies are archived for over nine years. Digital mammography is currently being phased in. Four digital systems have been installed in Temple and one at the Round Rock Hospital. Six additional devices are planned for late 2009 across the systems.

A new hospital and emergency department were also completed a couple of years ago. The new emergency department includes a large and sophisticated imaging center including two 64 slice CT's. A new facility to include a large multi-specialty clinic, hospital and full service imaging center has also been constructed in the north Austin area.

The diagnostic radiology residency program is phenomenal with high case volume and diversity of pathology. There is a mixture of fundamental and cutting edge technology. The faculty-to-resident ratio is high and the faculty and residents function together as a team, which makes for an awesome educational experience. There is now in-house faculty presence in addition to the residents on weekends and evenings.

Residents receive intensive exposure to all aspects of imaging including areas such as interventional radiology, neuroradiology, nuclear cardiology and OB ultrasound which at many programs are either absent or dominated by fellows.

Numerous research opportunities exist.

As you can tell, we are very excited about the direction the department and residency program is headed. Currently, we feel that this is one of the best radiology training programs in the country; however, we will continue to get even better.
