Clinical Activities

Development of the clinical skills needed by a practicing pulmonologist requires significant interaction with patients. Fellows are expected to participate actively on both inpatient and outpatient rotations. Each fellow follows an outpatient pulmonary clinic, providing long-term care for a group of patients with diverse pulmonary disorders. This activity is directly supervised by the faculty of the the Pulmonary Disease Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program.

Pulmonary fellows also have significant exposure to patients on the pulmonary inpatient service, the inpatient consulting service, and the inpatient MICU service. Although supervised by faculty, each fellow is expected to function in an independent, competent manner appropriate to his/her level of training. All fellows rotate through Anesthesiology, the CCU, MICU, Nutrition, the Pulmonary Function Lab, Pathology, Renal/Dialysis, the Sleep Disorders Laboratory and Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Fellows are also involved the County Health Department TB Clinic reviewing x-rays and interacting with mycobacterial issues. Second year fellows will be required to rotate at the Burns Unit in US Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas and the Transplant Department at University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, Texas.

Educational Activities

Fellows are expected to be actively involved in their own education. Extensive independent reading is required in each of the following areas:

• Pulmonary diseases
• Infectious diseases
• Pulmonary Physiology
• Sleep disorders
• Cardiology
• Critical Care Medicine

Attendance is required at the following educational conferences:

• Introductory lectures in Pulmonary Medicine (weekly for the first six months)
• Pulmonary Case Conference (weekly)
• Journal Clubs
• Pathology Conference (monthly)
• Lung Cancer Tumor Board Conference
• Sleep Conference

Fellows will also attend:

• Critical care lecture series twice a month
• Scott & White Department of Internal Medicine Grand Rounds while on all rotations at the Scott & White facility
• Risk Management Courses
