Primary Care Rotation

Preceptors: Kim Alfred, Pharm.D., Brandi Flemming, Pharm.D., Renee Overstreet, Pharm.D., CleAnn Toner, Pharm.D.

The primary care rotation is designed to acquaint the resident with a variety of disease states seen in the ambulatory clinic setting. The resident will also develop skills in managing drug therapy and in educating patients and healthcare professionals about drug therapy. The resident will be expected to participate in the selection of drug therapy, counsel patients on the appropriate use of medications, respond to questions from patients or healthcare workers regarding medications, monitor patient adherence to prescribed regimens and participate in quality assurance activities of the department.

The resident will participate in the core ambulatory care clinics at Scott & White, which include the Anticoagulation, Diabetes Clinic and Lipid Clinics. The resident may also participate in other clinic settings as needed.

The Anticoagulation Clinic at Scott & White at Temple currently follows approximately 1200 patients receiving warfarin for a variety of indications. The service also provides outpatient treatment of DVTs with low molecular weight heparins. The Anticoagulation Clinic at the Taylor Clinic currently manages approximately 125 patients. The rotation experience also provides the residents with the oppourtunity to follow patients for a prolonged period of time and observe response to therapy.

The Lipid Clinic in Temple follows patients on a referral basis for both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

The Diabetes Clinic provides chronic disease state management for patients with diabetes.

The Pediatric Lipid Clinic, in cooperation with the Department of Pediatrics, and the Hormone Replacement Clinic, which focuses on women’s health issues, provides a variety of opportunities for managing multiple disease states and medication-related problems.
