Managed Care Rotation
Preceptors: John Chaddick, R.Ph., Paul Godley, Pharm.D., Barry Browne, Pharm.D.

The managed care rotation provides experience for the resident in working with different disease management programs and outcome studies involving patients in the Scott & White Health Plan (SWHP), the institution’s 185,000-member health maintenance organization (HMO). These programs include:
- Adherence counseling
- Anticoagulation therapy
- Antimicrobial therapy
- Asthma management
- Lipid management
- Musculoskeletal pain management
- Peptic ulcer disease management
During the rotation, the resident has an opportunity to visit Scott & White regional clinics, with the resident participating in provision of information to physician providers concerning these disease management programs. The resident also gains experience in working with pharmacy administrative programs including: benefit design and implementation, physician prescription “profiling,” conversion programs and formulary development. In addition, the resident attends meetings at which policy decisions are made about current programs and the development of future programs.
