Hematology-Oncology
Preceptor: Jon Herrington, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCOP
The hematology / oncology patients are taken care by a patient care pharmacist and a clinical specialist. All chemotherapy and biotherapy are distributed by specially trained oncology pharmacists and technicians from the Glenda Tanner Vasicek Cancer Treatment Center. Residents on rotation will gain exposure to the following areas:
- Supportive care issues
- Nausea and emesis
- Febrile neutropenia
- Chemotherapy and disease induced anemia and thrombocytopenia
- Chemotherapy induced diarrhea
- Pain
- Breast cancer
- Gastrointestinal cancers
- Leukemias
- Lung cancer
- Lymphomas
- Multiple myeloma
- Oncologic emergencies
- Prostate cancer
- Sarcoma
- Sickle cell anemia
- Stem cell transplantation
- Thromboembolic events, DVT/PE
Resident responsibilities while participating in the hematology/oncology rotation:
- Participation in daily rounds with team
- Daily review of pharmaceutical care plan on all patients on the service
- Provide antibiotic streamlining and pharmacokinetic services as necessary
- Provide nursing and patient education as necessary
- Monitor chemotherapy administration
- Provision of drug information to the medical team as necessary
- Report adverse drug events/reactions according to hospital policy
- Weekly attendance at hematology/oncology noon conference
- Mentor pharmacy students
