Call Schedules
The Internal Medicine residency program is designed to be a quality educational experience with attention to scheduling which allows time for reading and studying.
In the PGY-1 year, interns are on call about every fourth or fifth night (q4-5) for three months, and one month of Night Float split into two half-month blocks. The Night Float responsibilities include taking houseofficer calls (no admissions) on the patients admitted to the teaching teams.
The call in the second year includes three months of every fourth night (q4), and one month of ICU night float split into two half-month blocks.
The third year has no overnight call responsibilities which will allow more time for board preparation. During the rotations of Scott & White Wards the call will be outlined below, with two short call days, one long call day and a post call day.
Our department is committed to following the ACGME duty hour regulations while maximizing the learning experience for residents on-call. Residents who are "post-call" after an overnight in-house call are relieved of duties the following day within the 24 + 6 hour rule. Residents are allowed to alternate weekend responsibilities so that they average at least one day out of seven out of the hospital. Our ICU night float rotation is also designed to comply with the duty hour policy. We have two inpatient medicine teams staffed only by hospitalists to comply with RRC-IM admission limits.
