All residents are required to participate in a "scholarly activity," a research project with a senior staff physician. These efforts are assisted by the project mentors, research director and the research coordinator.
2007-2009 AY Accomplishments
The faculty and residents in the Department of Emergency Medicine published 48 research abstracts, 13 original research articles and 25 printed or on-line book chapters. In addition, Dr. Stone co-edited the 6th edition of his textbook, “Current Diagnosis and Treatment Emergency Medicine.”
Over this same time, the EM faculty and residents gave 120 presentations at 34 medical or scientific meetings. This included original research findings at five international and 12 national meetings.
Our research interests are diverse and wide-ranging. Current projects include sepsis, toxicology, snake bite, high-fidelity simulation for education, continuous compression cardiac resuscitation, emergency department patient flow and emergency medical services.
Emergency Medicine Research Day
Residents present their projects during the annual Emergency Medicine Research Day in March. The day also includes a visit and talk from a visiting professor.
Residents are encouraged to submit their work for publication and presentation at scientific meetings.
Residents receive excellent support for data analysis from biostatistics and from biomedical communications with assistance in preparation of posters or manuscripts.
