We provide our residents every opportunity to obtain a well-rounded educational experience. We emphasize clinical skills taught under the supervision of Board Certified Emergency Physicians. We also offer the opportunity to become grounded in sound research principles and practices PDF document. Our academic year is divided into 13 four-week blocks.

PGY-1

During the first year, we offer a sound medical foundation with four-week rotations in obstetrics and gynecology, anesthesia, pediatrics, orthopedics, trauma service, medical ICU and internal medicine (one block in cardiology and either one block in general medicine [M.D. grads] or one block in family medicine [D.O. grads]). Six blocks of the intern year are spent in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Scott & White.

Nine blocks of the second year are spent in the Emergency Department. Two blocks are spent in critical care areas, Cardiovascular ICU and Pediatric ICU (traditionally one of the most popular rotations among the PG-2 residents). One block is spent performing Administrative/Toxicology/Research (ATR) duties. To round out the year, there are two weeks of electives and two weeks of difficult airways/research/ultrasound.

In addition to the clinical experiences outlined above, we offer a strong didactic program. A brief description of each conference is provided. Residents are expected to attend conferences and are relieved of clinical duties during scheduled conferences.

Residents are expected to be active in teaching health care professionals (including EMT and paramedic students), junior residents, off-service residents and medical students.

A research project is required for graduation.

Resident Responsibilities in the Emergency Department

Resident responsibility in the Emergency Department is graduated. Interns are responsible for seeing patients and learning patient management skills. Their patients are presented to upper level residents and staff. Under the supervision of more senior residents and staff, residents are expected to learn to recognize and begin to stabilize life-threatening illnesses.

Second-year residents are expected to see the majority of the patients in the department. They are expected to manage multiple patients, including the critically ill. In the second half of the year, second-year residents begin to supervise interns and medical students.

In the third year, residents will continue to see multiple patients. In addition, they take on supervisory responsibilities. The third-year resident supervises more junior residents and students, and provides EMS online medical control. With the assistance of the attending staff, the third-year resident is responsible for the overall management of the department. All patients are discussed with and seen by the attending physician prior to their disposition.

Residents at all levels of training are expected to teach ancillary personnel, EMS personnel and EMS students working in the department.

Research

Residents must participate in research. We encourage original research. Flexibility is allowed in selection of a project with many minor and major projects ongoing at any given time.
