About the Sleep Institute
Accredited center helps thousands to better sleep

Scott & White is one of only a few centers that provides immediate feedback from a sleep-trained physician the morning after a sleep study.
Patients are usually referred by their primary physicians, but self-referrals are also accepted. The appointment desk can be reached at 254-724-4189.
Accredited Sleep Center, Multispecialty Staff
The Scott & White Sleep Disorders Center opened in 1983 with Dr. Francisco Perez-Guerra as its architect, receiving accreditation by the American Sleep Disorders Association (now the American Academy of Sleep Medicine ) in 1984.
With four sleep disorder specialists in its staff, a state-of-the-art sleep laboratory, eight well trained sleep laboratory technologists, and medical consultants in specialties like otolaryngology, dentistry, adult and pediatric neurology and psychology/psychiatry, the center is ready to evaluate and treat all known sleep disorders.
Commonly Treated Conditions
One of the most common disorders, sleep apnea affects 18 million Americans and, untreated, can cause high blood pressure and heart attacks, among other health problems. Restless legs syndrome, another disorder, affects 12 million Americans, with many never seeking treatment.
Another problem that may cause embarrassment and may never be mentioned to physicians is violence in sleep as a result of “acting out of dreams,” a problem called the REM sleep behavior disorder, that can cause harm to the sufferer or the bed partner.
“We are just scratching the surface,” says Perez-Guerra. “Take for example an overactive child or one who has sleep terrors—ask if he or she snores habitually, look for enlarged tonsils and adenoids and have them surgically removed, and you may have a cure.”
State-of-the-art Sleep Lab
This state of the art laboratory is located on the fourth floor of the Lucy King Brown Special Treatment Center (STC) at the Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas. Patients to be evaluated during the evening arrive at 7 p.m. and are attended by well-trained technologists who perform the studies requested by the sleep specialist. The Scott & White staff places special emphasis on the confidentiality, comfort, privacy and respect for patients’ needs during these sleep evaluations.
