Scott & White cancer program gets NIH grant
- $3.2 million for Community Oncology Program -
TEMPLE, Texas – (January 21, 2009) Drs. Lucas Wong and Juan Posada, Jr., have received a $3.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to continue the Community Clinical Oncology Program at Scott & White, a program that provides cancer patients access to multiple clinical trials.
The grant funds the program for five more years. This Scott & White cancer program was started in 1997. The Community Clinical Oncology Program conducts phase one, two and three clinical trials for cancer treatment, control and prevention. Scott & White is part of a of six research base-network around the country that supports important clinical trial research. This network allows access to research data at other institutions doing the same studies and is able to pool different population groups for better findings. It has helped to link patients seeking enrollment in particular studies with institutions taking part in those studies.
“Access to clinical trials is an important factor that doctors consider when choosing where to refer their patients,” said Dr. Wong, an oncologist at Scott & White and is the principal investigator of the Scott & White program. “This grant and the Community Clinical Oncology Program are part of our Cancer Center services which is making Scott & White a destination for patients, and a resource for physicians from across the region.”
The Cancer Program at Scott & White was granted a “Three-Year Approval with Commendation” from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer in 2008.
There are currently 30 treatment trials and six cancer control/prevention trials in progress at Scott & White. Scott & White Clinic physicians refer patients from their specialty clinics to the Oncology Clinic for treatment, as a team of 15 Scott & White physicians enroll patients as subjects into trials.
The CCOP trials are focused on a wide range of areas and disease categories including breast, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynecologic, lung, leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
“The whole cancer team at Scott & White is proud of the continuing achievements of the Community Clinical Oncology Program,” said Dr. Wong. “This grant reflects the success of the program, and gives hope for patients, as well as physician researchers.
