Barnes & Noble and Scott & White Healthcare – Round Rock host holiday book reading event to benefit The Children’s BookWell Program
-Portion of ‘Black Friday’ event proceeds go toward hospital’s ongoing pediatric literacy program-
ROUND ROCK, Texas — Barnes & Noble - Round Rock in La Frontera Village will open at 9 a.m. on Black Friday, November 27, 2009 at 2701 Parker Road to kick-off a three-day book-reading event for children with the doctors and staff from Scott & White Healthcare - Round Rock. A portion of the proceeds from the three-day event will go towards Scott & White – Round Rock’s Children’s Book Well Program, an ongoing pediatric literacy program that encourages early literacy and reading to children and provides new books for young patients at its hospital and clinics during their annual “well child” appointments.
“We’re excited to host this event with the doctors and staff at Scott & White - Round Rock to help encourage parents about the importance of literacy and reading to their children at an early age,” says Frank Campbell, Community Relations Manager at Barnes & Noble. “This event provides a perfect opportunity to stop by while you’re out shopping for the holidays to help benefit not only literacy but also your community.”
Scott & White– Round Rock created The Children’s BookWell Program for patients at its Round Rock Hospital and regional clinics. The mission of the program is to foster and nurture children’s growth and development through the availability and reading of books.
“Reading to children at an early age helps physicians better diagnose communication disorders by reviewing with parents their observations of a child’s ability to remember stories, point to characters in the books, and eventually develop language and reading skills,” says Jennifer Helmcamp, M.D., pediatrician at Scott & White – Wells Branch Clinic. “Additionally, reading to children early takes advantage of early brain development and the knowledge acquired during this period will impact their learning potential for life.” Dr. Helmcamp goes on to say that “when we read to children, we give them a gift that lasts a lifetime and helps spark their imagination.” Dr. Helmcamp’s favorite book is “Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” by Mo Willems.
Vouchers will be distributed in advance of the event and will need to be presented at the register if making a purchase as part of the event. If customers don’t have a voucher, cashiers can be told that a purchase is being made as part of the event which is good for any product in the store except gift cards. Barnes & Noble is open from 9 a.m. - 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and Sundays from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Vouchers apply to all purchases: books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, gift items, games and cafe consumables. The only exceptions are the purchase of Barnes & Noble Gift Cards and Barnes & Noble Memberships. Also, the vouchers do not convey a discount and are only good in the store, not online.
