Scott & White Healthcare recognizes Outstanding Residents
TEMPLE, Texas — Christopher S. Armstrong, M.D., and Shawn J. Skeen, M.D., were recently selected as Outstanding Residents at Scott & White Healthcare, chosen by the Graduate Medical Education Committee. Drs. Armstrong and Skeen each received a plaque and certificate as well as a $1000 stipend.
Dr. Armstrong, a fourth-year chief resident in anesthesiology, received the John L. Montgomery Scott & White Hospital Outstanding Resident Award for his strong sense of leadership and his excellent problem-solving skills.
“Dr. Armstrong’s greatest attribute, however, is his ability to communicate effectively with patients and their families, faculty, his peer group and ancillary staff,” according to Dr. Russell McAllister, his nominator, who serves as associate professor of anesthesiology at the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine and staff anesthesiologist at Scott & White. He also cites Dr. Armstrong’s leadership as the House Staff Association President and as Chief Resident at Scott & White.
A graduate of the Texas Tech University School of Medicine, Dr. Armstrong served as a 2008 delegate at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Resident Component House of Delegates. He received both the 2008 Best Presentation and Best Clinical Paper awards at the Scott & White Department of Anesthesiology Resident Research Day.
Dr. Armstrong is joining an anesthesiology group in Abilene, Texas.
Dr. Skeen, a third-year internal medicine resident, received the C. Charles Welch Scott & White Hospital Outstanding Resident Award.
“Knowledgeable, responsible, and exceptionally enthusiastic, Dr. Skeen has patient-centered care as his focus, as well as great rapport with staff,” said Dr. John David Myers, Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, internal medicine program director and Dr. Skeen’s nominator.
Dr. Skeen is also credited with leadership in quality assurance, fostering modification of the blood drawing system to improve efficiency and increase patient satisfaction.
Dr. Skeen graduated from the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine. He is the 2008-09 South Texas representative on the Texas Academy of Internal Medicine board of directors, and the 2008-09 chair of the Scott & White Community Internal Medicine Resident Clinic Improvement Committee.
Dr. Skeen will serve as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine at Scott & White next year.
The John L. Montgomery Scott & White Hospital Outstanding Resident Award is named for retired radiologist and former clinic board president Dr. John L. Montgomery. He was instrumental in advancing graduate medical education at Scott & White.
The C. Charles Welch Scott & White Hospital Outstanding Resident Award is named for the late Dr. C. Charles Welch, a staff cardiologist.
