VMH Health, part of Scott & White, Awarded “The Most Promising Life Science Technology Company” at Rice Alliance Life Science Venture Forum

Temple, Texas — VMH Health, a spin-out company from Scott & White Healthcare and Texas A&M Health Science Center, was recently named the most promising life science company at the 8th Annual Rice Alliance for Technology & Entrepreneurship Life Science Venture Forum in Houston. Life Science companies showcased their new ventures for an audience of more than 400 attendees, including investors, venture capitalists, industry representatives, business leaders, advisors/mentors, service providers and entrepreneurs.

VMH Health has licensed patented technologies to develop a diagnostic device and therapy for “essential” hypertension (high blood pressure of unknown origin). The patents are based on over 25 years of research by scientist Jules Puschett, M.D., Vice Dean for Program Development, Professor of Medicine, and Professor of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics at Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine and a member of the senior staff at Scott & White Memorial Hospital, Division of Nephrology and Hypertension..

“Hypertension is a disease that affects 73 million Americans and 30% of the U.S. population will be affected by it in their lifetime,” says Dr. Puschett. “We also expect hypertension rates to increase as our population ages and as the rates of obesity and diabetes continue to increase.”

The company is working with INCELL Corporation in San Antonio to develop diagnostic prototypes and further test a specific therapeutic agent. These efforts continue collaborative relationships between Texas A&M Health Science Center and Scott & White in the commercialization of the company’s products.

CEO Gary Litwin said of the recognition, “We’re very pleased to have been recognized for our company’s efforts to date and we believe this news helps to validate our business mission.”
The one-day event culminated in an announcement of the “Most Promising Life Science Companies,” chosen from nearly 35 competitors and judged by the Rice Alliance Information Technology Advisory Board.

The Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship is Rice University’s flagship initiative devoted to the support of technology entrepreneurship.
