TEMPLE, Texas – Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner Dr. David L. Lakey is the featured speaker for the Fifteenth Annual Jesse D. Ibarra, Jr., M.D. Lectureship. The lecture will be Friday, Nov. 21, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Mayborn Auditorium at Scott & White in Temple.
Dr. Lakey’s program is titled “Moving Health Forward in Texas: Strengthening Public Health and Medical Care.”
“Though we are here in Central Texas, the issues of border health and natural disasters impact all Texans,” said Dr. James Rohack, director of the Scott & White Center for Healthcare Policy. “We are honored that Dr. Lakey will be presenting the opportunities to move health forward in Texas by implementing effective community-based initiatives and strengthening the public health system.”
As commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services, Dr. Lakey oversees one of the state’s largest agencies, and is responsible for a long list of programs that range from disease prevention and bioterrorism preparedness, to substance abuse prevention and treatment. Now in its fifteenth year, the Ibarra lecture series has featured leaders in public health from national and international organizations to explore topics on public health. The Scott & White Clinic Board established the lecture series to honor Dr. Ibarra, who retired from Scott & White following 43 years of service on the senior staff. As chairman of the Scott & White Special Projects Committee, Dr. Ibarra initiated the formation of the original health maintenance organization in the late 1970s, which was later named the Scott & White Health Plan.
