Lily
When Lily Renee Dobert was born in September of 2006, she was a very sick baby. Her abdomen was extremely distended, and she was covered with a peculiar rash called blueberry muffin purpura. An alert multidisciplinary medical team at Scott & White quickly diagnosed neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer. Lily had been born with a softball-sized tumor on her left adrenal gland, and the cancer was also found in the placenta. Only eleven similar cases were known, and none of those infants had survived.
When Lily was four days old, surgery was performed to remove the malignancy. A biopsy confirmed the cancer had spread to her liver. She spent seven weeks in the Children's Hospital at Scott & White, undergoing chemotherapy that included the most advanced cancer treatment protocols available anywhere in the world. Her family and her physicians are convinced Lily has made history, thanks to a quick diagnosis and her own fighting spirit.
Today Lily is undergoing treatment for a recurrence of her cancer. She continues to be an inspiration as she sets new milestones in the treatment of neuroblastoma in newborns.
