Cancer Research

Patients that are faced with a cancer diagnosis will likely search for the best possible treatment options even if it requires travel to distant cities. Fortunately for patients in Central Texas, they do not have to look any further than Scott & White in Temple. Our patients know that innovative research and high-quality healthcare is being conducted at a local healthcare institution. Scott & White is easily accessible to Central Texas residents no matter what region they call home.
Scott & White enhances the quality of care through progressive research using the latest technologies, novel therapies and new drug advances. Cancer research is made possible through the conduct of more than 150 clinical trials, as well as important basic research. Clinical trials are scientific studies in people that determine the dosing, safety and efficacy of investigational agents. These agents include new drugs, new drug combinations, and investigational devices, which are tested for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. These studies allow physician researchers to test whether the investigational agent is comparable to the standard of care. By participating in a clinical trial, patients may help in the development of new treatment modalities for the present and the future.
At the Scott & White Center for Cancer Prevention and Care, the areas of research include cooperative group trials; industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated trials; and basic laboratory research.

National Cancer Institute Community Clinical Oncology Program (NCI-CCOP)
The Center for Cancer Prevention and Care is funded by the NCI as a designated Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP). Since 1966, our cancer program has participated in cooperative group clinical trials, which are encompassed under the CCOP. These trials are typically phase II and phase III and they involve hundreds or thousands of participants throughout the United States and Canada. Of the 48 CCOP’s in the U.S., Scott & White is the only CCOP in Texas.
As a CCOP, Scott & White is able to participate in seven cooperative groups including the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), the Children’s Oncology Group, the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center. The Scott & White CCOP also participates in the Cancer Trials Support Unit in order to have access to other cooperative group trials. More than 150 clinical trial opportunities are available through the Scott & White CCOP for cancer prevention, control and treatment.
National Cancer Prevention Trials
Breast Cancer - Scott & White has conducted NSABP’s national landmark prevention trials for breast cancer since 1992. Currently, the study of Tomoxifen and Raloxifene (STAR) in reducing the occurrence of breast cancer in post-menopausal women (35 or older) who are at risk for the disease is open at Scott & White through the NSABP. For more information or to request a Risk Assessment form, please contact the STAR researchers at 800-551-8858.
Prostate Cancer – Scott & White is currently enrolling men onto the SELECT trial, which is studying the use of selenium and vitamin E in the prevention of prostate cancer in men 55 and older (50 and older in African American men). For more information, please contact the SELECT researchers at 800-225-0626.
Developmental Therapeutics
The Developmental Therapeutics (DT) program conducts research aimed at new drug and treatment development. Approximately 30 industry-sponsored clinical trials are available including phase I, II, and III studies. Additionally, Scott & White physician investigators conduct their own intramural studies through the DT program. Intramural studies are the first step for new investigators to ask and answer important scientific questions. These studies often serve as a preliminary “stepping stone” for investigators who wish to obtain extramural grants.
