Minutes matter when it comes to treating a heart attack
Every year, almost 400,000 people experience ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI)—the deadliest type of heart attack, according to the American Heart Association.
Many of those who experience this type of heart attack will not live through it.
Scott & White Round Rock has put together a Heart Attack Survival Kit at myheartplan.org that details the signs and symptoms of a heart attack, which include:
- Chest discomfort
- Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and returns.
- Discomfort in other areas of the upper body
- This may be felt in one or both arms, the back, neck jaw or stomach.
- Shortness of breath
- Often occurs with or before chest discomfort.
Along with publicizing vital information, Scott & White Round Rock has also become an accredited Chest Pain Center.
"An accreditation makes sure that the best practices are being followed in our facility," said Melissa Juarez, Chest Pain/STEMI Coordinator. "It improves the quality outcome of our chest pain patients."
Even though Scott & White Round Rock is treating patients quickly and efficiently, the best way to ensure immediate care is to call 9-1-1 and let someone know you're in danger.
"Don't delay," Ms. Juarez said. "Call if you're having any heart attack symptoms."
