About kidneys

The kidney is a vital organ for survival and performs many functions, including:

  • Elimination of water and waste products of body function
  • Production of hormones that keep the blood count in a normal range
  • Ensure that bones are able to be fortified from the calcium in your diet

In the event of kidney failure, patients may lose several of these functions and ultimately lapse into a coma and die without some form of replacement therapy. Kidney transplantation is one option to replacement therapy for failing kidneys.

Purpose of Transplantation

Transplantation is not a cure for kidney failure. It is only an alternative to dialysis. Not all patients are suited for transplantation.

Transplantation is suitable for individuals who are active, have no other diseases which may limit their life span, and are willing to make the commitment to caring for their kidneys and themselves.

Kidneys are precious resources. Unfortunately, there are not enough kidneys available for those needing them. Thus it is essential that the recipient take good care of the transplant.

Kidney transplantation will not prolong your life compared to dialysis. It will only provide an improved quality of life for most people.
