Department of Medicine
The mission of the Department of Medicine is congruent with the mission of Scott and White Clinic, which is "Excellence in Patient Care Enhanced by Education and Research"
We are pleased to offer a wide variety of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities in the care of our patients. Some areas of expertise include electrophysiology, AICD implantation, endoscopic ultrasound, stenting procedures, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation, renal transplantation and investigational drugs in the treatment of neoplasia.
The Department of Medicine has a long history of commitment to medical education. There is a twelve week medicine clerkship in the student's third year of education. Our medical school accepts 64 students a year and at any one time there are twelve to fourteen trainees in the Department of Medicine. We have a total of 36 medicine residents. Fellowship programs are offered in Gastroenterology, Pulmonary Diseases, Cardiology, and Medical Oncology. Senior staff physicians are active in each of these programs. Residents and fellows are active both in the Hospital and the Clinic. The clinic as a whole has over one million patient visits per year.
Continuing medical education and faculty development are integral parts of the departmental activities. Our Annual Review of General Internal Medicine is in its eighteenth year.
Research endeavors include participation in the Southwest Oncology Group, an active hepatobiliary study section, and a the Cardiovascular Research Center (Division of Molecular Cardiology). Collaborative research projects with colleagues at Texas A&M University (College Station, Texas) are encouraged.
