Objectives
The purpose of the fellowship is to provide an in-depth clinical experience in pulmonary disease and critical care medicine, and to teach the procedural required to function independently as a pulmonologist. In order to successfully complete the program, fellows must meet the following objectives:
- Develop a working knowledge of the tests of pulmonary functions used to quantify and analyze impairment in patients with respiratory complaints.
- Develop the ability to interpret data derived from imaging devices including chest x-rays, CT scans of the thoracic cavity, pulmonary angiograms and radionuclide scans.
- Develop an understanding of disorders of sleep physiology.
- Develop the psycho-motor and procedural skills necessary to safely and competently perform:
- Fiberoptic bronchoscopy (with transbronchoscopic biopsy and transbronchoscopic needle aspiration)
- Intubation (including both direct intubation and bronchoscopic intubation)
- Thoracentesis and pleural biopsy; transthoracic fine needle aspiration
- Placement of central venous lines with interpretation of physiologic data acquired by such devices (including insertion of Swan-Ganz catheters) and interpretation of the data
