About Scott & White
Scott & White Memorial Hospital is a 486-bed facility with a strong commitment to medical education and medical research. There are more than 21,000 hospital admissions annually, all of which are considered teaching patients. Approximately 900 bronchoscopies are performed annually.

Fellows will be exposed to patients with both common and rare pulmonary disorders. Interaction with a well-trained academic faculty of thoracic surgeons, cardiologists, invasive radiologists, oncologists, allergists and pathologists is assured.

A new Intensive Care Unit
Scott & White opened a new 70-bed intensive care unit in December 2006 in the newly-built Main Hospital. Of the 70 ICU beds, 20 are medical.

The Critical Care component of the program emphasizes the diagnosis and management of medical problems in critically ill patients in the medical intensive care unit.

A strong interactive collaboration exists with the surgical and coronary divisions. Special emphasis is paid to the identification and management of emotional problems of patients and families and to bioethical problems that may exist.

An important part of the training is to foster the interaction of the subspecialty resident with the team of multidisciplinary practitioners that works in the intensive care unit.

The Division emphasizes the practice of medicine based on evidence and pay special attention to outcomes data. The generation of new knowledge is fostered within the Division by faculty mentors. Research is ongoing in the areas of physiology, pulmonary hypertension, sleep disorders and critical care outcomes.
