RESIDENT PERSPECTIVE

Psychiatry resident Niki Moore

"Scott & White was my first choice for many reasons.

The first thing that I noticed when I interviewed here was that the residents here happy and extremely supportive of one another.

As an intern I have learned that the attending staff are approachable, knowledgeable and remember what it is like being a resident.

Our residency director is readily available and has a reputation for being proactive in implementing changes to make us more comfortable and make our experiences as positive and enjoyable as possible.

I am very pleased with my decision and proud to be part of what I consider to be one of the best psychiatry residency programs in the nation."

Resident Life

Annual Resident Retreat

Psychiatry residency retreat

Each year, the entire residency program goes on a departmental retreat for one weekday in the spring.

Attendance is required for all residents and they are excused from all clinical duties during this time. The retreat is a great chance for residents to bond and to discuss major issues that need to be addressed over the course of the coming year.

Residents are encouraged to discuss their experiences over the year and offer suggestions for changes to rotations as well as bring up new or innovative changes to add to the program. This year we plan to add a Fall retreat to a “ropes course” to work on leadership and team building exercises.

After Hours

Residents are involved in various activities outside of work. Recently, there has been an annual trips to Arkansas to go canoeing and camping. Last year there was a departmental softball team composed of faculty, staff and residents. Additonally, there are frequent informal gatherings at resident’s or faculty member’s homes for dinner, games or just to socialize.

Resident Lunches

Three to five days out of the week lunch is provided. During most lunches, there is an educational component.

Twice monthly there is a consultation/liaison conference in which a case from the C&L team is discussed. Once a month there is an ethics conference during which a case, paper or issue is discussed that poses a particular ethical concern. There is also a monthly journal club during which one of the residents presents a journal article that is provided to the other residents in advance. The discussion at these conferences is lead by one of the faculty members.

Additionally, twice monthly there is a board/PRITE review noon meeting during which board-style questions are discussed in a non-threatening supportive environment. Regularly scheduled grand rounds are presented on Fridays, covering a wide range of current topics in psychiatry.

Resident Meetings

Resident meetings are held every other Tuesday at noon. This is the time for residents to meet with their chief resident in order to discuss active issues. This frequent meeting time allows changes to be implemented quickly and keeps the residents involved and happy.
