Podiatry Education

Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Three-Year Rotation Schedule

The podiatry service treated 19,000 patients during the last fiscal year and the podiatric surgery resident will participate in the clinical, surgical and hospital care of these patients. The clinic and the hospital are in adjacent facilities and there is a significant amount of coordination between these facilities and satellite clinics, as well as the other specialists helping care for these patients. The resident will, early in the process, begin direct communication with other senior staff members and residents and share decision making responsibilities with the podiatric faculty with respect to treatment and recommendations. Initially the resident will see patients with the members of the faculty and as competency and proficiency increase, will be able to see some patients independently. The podiatric clinics are located at the Scott & White Santa Fe facility a few blocks away from the main Scott & White campus. The resident will be expected to make daily rounds on all inpatients during the first two months of the academic year and is allowed one weekend a month free of this responsibility for the remaining ten months of the academic year.

All medical charting, imaging, labs, etc. are electronic and can be accessed via computer. Similarly, you will have access to a medical library where searches and article retrieval can be done online or on campus. The on-site medical library is supported by both Scott & White and Texas A&M Health Science Center. Articles can be sent to you electronically or by mail.

Rotations

Endocrinology Rotation

The resident will work with the five faculty endocrinologists and the endocrinology fellow caring for endocrinology patients in the clinic and in the hospital. Familiarity will be developed with respect to diabetes and calcium-phosphorous biochemistry in particular. Full participation in the endocrinology conferences is expected.

Anesthesia Rotation

Participation under the supervision of senior staff anesthesiologists will include participation in the pre-operative and post-operative assessment of surgical patients as well as participating in the administration and monitoring of anesthesia. Familiarity will be developed with respect to anesthetic agents and methods in the establishment of a good knowledge base of appropriate anesthesia care. This experience is divided between the Anesthesia Pain Clinic and the outpatient Surgery Center.

Emergency Medicine Rotation

The Scott & White emergency medicine service is staffed by board certified emergency medicine faculty. There are also residents working toward full qualification in emergency medicine as well as residents from various other services who may be rotating in the facility. The podiatry resident will participate in patient care under the guidance of senior staff and will participate in triage and treatment of cases that present for care. This will include participation in the care of patients with a large variety of medical problems and is not intended to be focused solely on foot pathology.

Radiology Rotation

The radiology department has a teaching file available for study of diagnostic evaluations of various pathologies. The radiology faculty consists of 20 senior staff fully qualified as radiologists with a variety of special interests represented. An emphasis on diagnostic modalities for the osseous and soft tissue structures of the lower extremity will be reflected by development of familiarity of plane radiographs, tomography, CT scans, MRI scans and other similar technology.

Orthopedic Surgery

The podiatry resident will participate on the orthopedic surgery service under the guidance of 11 faculty members who are all board certified in the specialty. Attention will be given to the musculoskeletal system in general and the development of diagnostic and treatment programs in the field of orthopedics. Participation will include clinical duties and surgical participation, as well as hospital care of orthopedic patients. This rotation occurs in each year of the podiatry residency and covers general orthopedics, trauma service and foot and ankle clinic.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

You will actively participate in the care of patients referred to this service under the guidance of six board certified physicians in an accredited rehabilitation center. You will gain insight into the treatment/management of conditions such as chronic pain, nerve compression syndromes, fibromyalgia, sports injuries, occupational injuries, CVA, joint replacement rehab, amputation rehab and injection therapies for neuron-muscular disorders.

Pathology

This service covers both anatomic and clinical pathology. Under the direction of board-certified specialists, you will participate in the diagnostic services relating to the evaluation, interpretation and correlation of specimen analysis. This will include histology, microbiology, serology/immunology and toxicology.

Psychology

Psychiatry and behavioral medicine addresses the illnesses that affect our most human qualities - disorders of thinking, feeling and behaving. This rotation will teach you to better understand these illnesses and how they impact other aspects of healthcare delivery. This is a hospital-based consult service rotation.

Podiatry Technician Clinic

The podiatry clinic has well-trained support staff that do see patients for support services such as cast application, advanced wound care, patient education and dressing changes. While the resident will be exposed to all aspects of podiatric care throughout the training program, this rotation occurs in your last year to ensure you are fully competent to perform and supervise all aspects of patient care.

Pedorthics

Your pedorthic rotation will consist of two weeks during each of your three years of residency for a total of six weeks. Upon completion, you will be eligible to sit for your pedorthic boards if you choose. You will have detailed knowledge and experience in the following areas as they relate to pedorthic services. They are: history and physical, custom molded shoes, prosthetic fillers, fitting over the counter shoes, manufacture and fit of custom foot orthoses, shoe modifications, hosiery/socks, vendor relations, billing/coding, machinery and equipment. This rotation takes place at the Scott & White Footwear Center which is housed within the podiatry clinic space. The facilities also include a full orthoses lab which includes a CADCAM system.
