Clinical Pharmacy Residency Curriculum
Hospital Pharmacy Practice Residency
The Hospital Pharmacy Practice Residency offered at Scott & White is affiliated with The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy. The goal of the residency is to provide training and experience for individuals interested in hospital pharmacy practice. Each resident completes six months (two three-month blocks) of clinical rotations under the supervision of a clinical pharmacy faculty member. Guidelines for required and elective rotations are summarized below. Additionally, the hospital pharmacy practice residents complete six months (two three-month blocks) of hospital-based pharmacy practice under the supervision of a Scott & White patient care pharmacist.
Required Rotations At least one month, and no more than two months, of each of the following rotations will be completed by each Pharmacy Practice Resident:
Elective Rotations
Each Pharmacy Practice Resident may choose one-month rotations in each of the following areas to complete the remaining clinical rotations:
- Hematology/Oncology
- Pediatrics
- Research

Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Practice Residency
The goal of the residency is to provide training and experience for individuals interested in ambulatory care and community pharmacy practice. The residency is affiliated with The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy. Experiential components include community pharmacy practice and activities in pharmacy-driven ambulatory care settings, including congestive heart failure and anticoagulation clinics. Opportunities are also available for collaborative research and teaching experiences for the resident. Requirements include a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and licensure or licensure eligibility in Texas. Managed Care Pharmacy Practice Residency
The managed care residency at Scott & White Health Plan, in affiliation with The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy, provides the resident with experience in a health maintenance organization environment; the resident is involved in the development and implementation of a variety of disease state management programs and outcome studies involving HMO patients. These programs include:
- Outpatient services in anticoagulation therapy
- Lipid management
- Asthma management compliance counseling
- Antimicrobial therapy
- Peptic ulcer disease management and management of musculoskeletal pain
The program also provides an opportunity for the resident to be involved in visits to the Scott & White regional clinics and participation in provision of information to physician providers concerning these disease management programs and other health plan pharmacy issues. The resident will also gain exposure to administrative functions and programs including: benefit design and implementation, physician profiling, conversion programs and formulary development. In addition, the resident will attend health plan administrative meetings in which policy decisions are made regarding ongoing programs and the development of future programs.

Advanced Specialty Residency Curriculum
The Advanced Specialty Residencies offered by Scott & White in conjunction with The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy provide post-doctoral training in drug information, primary care and hematology/oncology. Residents are selected each year from applicants interested in these various practice areas. The post-doctoral specialty residencies provide experiential rotations in a variety of practice settings in the hospital, clinic and health plan. Opportunities are also available for collaborative research and teaching experiences for the residents; the positions provide an opportunity for appointment at the rank of Clinical Instructor with the College of Pharmacy. Requirements include:
- A post-baccalaureate Doctor of Pharmacy degree or entry-level Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
- Texas pharmacy licensure eligibility and
- A strong interest in clinical pharmacy practice
