Pharmacy Residency Program

PICU

The primary objective of the Scott & White Pharmacy Residency Program is to train and develop residents who possess in-depth knowledge and skills in general and clinical pharmacy practice. For example, pharmacy practice residents develop a broad spectrum of practice skills in medicine (adult and pediatric), drug information, infectious disease, primary care, pharmacokinetics and general hospital pharmacy practice. Advanced specialty residents develop in-depth, integrated, independent practice skills in a specialty area.

In addition to the primary objectives, the residency program helps residents develop comprehensive knowledge and skills in the ever-evolving profession of pharmacy. These additional skills include teaching, research methodology and written and verbal communication skills. Teaching opportunities include leading clinical clerkship discussion with doctoral pharmacy students and presenting lectures in classroom/professional settings. Research opportunities in conjunction with the clinical faculty are extensive, particularly if the resident completes both the Pharmacy Practice and Advanced Specialty residencies at Scott & White. Resident involvement in both teaching and research is strongly encouraged.

Preceptors in the Scott & White Pharmacy Residency programs are committed to excellence in teaching and to the personal and professional development of residents on their rotations or under their supervision. Teaching residents is a priority of the Department of Pharmacy. Thus, development and maintenance of clinical and technical expertise is expected of all preceptors.

Residents must personally accept a significant level of responsibility for success in achieving the goals and objectives of the residency program, and the pharmacy residents are typically highly motivated to reach the goals of the program.
