Application and Selection Process

We utilize the Electronic Residency Application Service. We do not accept paper applications for PGY-1 positions. Interviewing for PGY-1 positions is traditionally done during the months of October, November and December. If PGY-1 positions are available after the NRMP Match, then interviews are held whenever needed. For advanced-level positions, please contact Cheryl Dixon, Program Coordinator.

Previous clinical experience outside the medical school setting is not required for admission to the Pathology Residency Program; however, some knowledge of pathology as a specialty and evidence of interests and experiences in pathology/laboratory medicine is highly desirable. In order for an application to be considered, it must be accompanied by at least three letters of recommendation from people who know the applicant personally. At least one of these letters should be from an academic dean of the applicant's medical school. Applicants for advanced- level training should also include a letter from the director of their current pathology residency program.

Selected applicants are invited for interviews based on the criteria indicated below. The Pathology Residency Steering Committee, which is chaired by the program director and consists of several appropriate faculty members, evaluates the interviews the candidates and makes a decision regarding acceptance.

Prerequisites

Potential residents must have passed USMLE Step II, or an equivalent examination, prior to beginning any Texas A&M-Scott & White Graduate Medical Education Program. It would be helpful if applicants would include their USMLE scores with the application.

In addition, graduates of American medical schools must have passed USMLE Step III (or equivalent) to participate in a Scott & White program beyond the first 18 months of training. An extension of six additional months may be made if extenuating personal circumstances exist. There is no extension beyond 24 months of training.

Graduates of medical schools in other countries are required to complete three years of graduate medical education before taking USMLE Step III in Texas. These individuals must pass Step III within six months of eligibility to continue in a Texas A&M-Scott & White Residency Program.
