Research

All residents are required to participate in clinical or basic science research in an ongoing manner. A research rotation devoting 50 percent of time to research as well as during other rotations is available for completion of research projects. Each resident must complete one project during his five years, which can be prospective or bench research and which should be publishable.

The orthopaedic group actively participates in clinical trials of new drugs and devices.

An animal surgery laboratory is maintained at Scott & White with facilities for feeding and housing small animals. A full-time employee maintains this facility and assists the staff and residents when needed.

Scott & White provides funding of research projects and during the last four years, has funded annually approximately $1,000,000 for research projects, with an estimated $347,547.00 over those four years toward orthopedic research. This has supported both resident and senior faculty clinical and basic science research activities. The orthopaedic staff and residents compete for these funds with the other physicians on staff.

An active Biostatistics Department headed by two doctoral level bio-statisticians is available and funded by Scott & White. All varieties of statistical analyses and assistance in the design of appropriate investigational models are available through this group.

During the past five years, the Orthopaedic Senior staff and residents have produced more than 50 publications and presentations.
