Program History
The first ophthalmologist joined Scott & White Clinic in 1895, shortly after the clinic was founded. Ophthalmology training began at Scott & White in 1955 with the addition of the first preceptor. The formal residency program in ophthalmology began in 1964. The program has trained two residents per year since 1968, but expanded to three residents per year with the 2002 match. Scott & White Clinic and Hospital formally affiliated with Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine in 1972. The Division of Ophthalmology became the Scott & White Eye Institute in 2002 in anticipation of the move to the new building that opened in April of 2003.
