Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine
The Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine (TAMHSC-COM) was formed in 1975 under the Teague-Cranston Act and the current three legal entities that comprise the College of Medicine (COM) are Texas A&M, Scott & White and the Olin E. Teague Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Scott & White is the primary clinical campus for the COM and the third- and fourth-year medical students complete their clinical rotations at Scott & White.
Scott & White hosts TAMHSC-COM-affiliated training programs in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, General Surgery, Pathology, Radiology, Family Medicine, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Ophthalmology, Podiatry, Urology, Obstetrics-Gynecology and Emergency Medicine; and fellowships in Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Pulmonary-Critical Care and Infectious Diseases. All programs are currently in good standing with their respective RRC’s.
The development of the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) with the VA, the College of Medicine and Scott & White has fostered a core basic science research group that focuses on molecular and cellular biology mechanistic research in the broad field of cardiovascular physiology. Dr. Ken Baker is the director of the CVRI.
Scott & White and Texas A&M have cooperated in the funding and building of two buildings on the Scott & White campus.
The Medical Research Building is a wet lab research facility that is fully occupied by investigators. The Medical Education Center comprises a classroom, large auditorium, learning center, medical library and the offices of the dean and associate dean.
These commitments by both partners demonstrate the degree of collaboration between the two parties. It is of note that all Scott & White financial support comes from operational monies from the clinical practice, confirming Scott & White's full commitment to its mission statement.
Bell County, the home of Scott & White, has also formed the first Bioscience Health, Education and Research Authority in the state of Texas. This Authority has the mission to grow and enhance research at Scott & White and Texas A&M, and has statutory authority to levy taxes to support its mission.
