Scott & White

Scott & White is an integrated health care system that was founded in 1897. It is one of the largest multi-specialty group practices in the United States. The two legal entities at Scott & White are the Scott, Brindley, and Sherwood Medical Foundation (a non-profit 501(c)3 organization recognized by the IRS) and the separate Scott & White Health Plan, an insurance company founded in 1983, which is also a non-profit organization recognized by the IRS.

The Mission Statement of Scott & White is to provide personalized, high quality, comprehensive healthcare, enhanced by medical education and research.  Scott & White has had residency training programs since the early 1920s. Currently Scott & White has over 100 GME positions that are funded solely by Scott & White since they are over the Medicare cap on reimbursement for GME programs and candidates.

The funding for the nephrology fellowship is provided by the division and by a generous $100,000 grant to the fellowship in the honor of one of the nephrologists, Dr. Allan Nickel. The Scott & White Division of Research and Education, chaired by Associate Dean for Research and Education, Dr. Wally Dyck, is sponsored by Scott & White and Texas A&M University Health Science Center College of Medicine. Dr. Dyck reports to the Dean of the College of Medicine, Dr. Chris Colenda, and the CEO and President of Scott & White, Dr. Al Knight. All research and education efforts at Scott & White fall under the supervision of Dr. Dyck. Currently, Scott & White funds this office at $3.5 million per year, exclusive of the direct support of GME positions over the Medicare capitation allowance.

The Scott & White Health Plan includes over 188,000 members, rating first in patient satisfaction in the Southwest and in the top 10 nationally since its inception in 1983. Recognizing that physicians direct the care of patients, the Health Plan does not interfere with clinical practice or medical decision-making. The Health Plan enjoys an established membership that experieces little turnover, creating a very stable long-term patient population.
