Patients

Doctors with a patientAnother feature of the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine - Scott & White Internal Medicine Residency Program is the large variety of patients coming from different backgrounds. Scott & White serves a large primary care base in Central Texas, and is also a tertiary referral center for more complicated patients coming from Texas and the southwestern United States. Scott & White Health Plan provides healthcare for 186,000 Central Texans. Since there is no charity hospital in Bell County, most of the indigent patients come to Scott & White along with many Medicaid and Medicare patients. There is no separation of private or staff patients since most patients are on a medicine teaching service.

The teaching services function like at any typical university academic center. The residents write the orders, do the procedures, the discharge summaries and take care of the patients. They have one teacher attending who is responsible for supervising and teaching the house staff 24 hours per day, seven days a week. In addition to the patients at Scott & White the VA Hospital provides a large group of patients coming from a federally funded healthcare system which enhances the overall experience of the residents in this program.
