Call Schedule

The Scott & White Family Medicine Program has a night float call system. The resident on the night float rotation comes in at 6 p.m. and leaves at 8 a.m. The night float has no other clinical duties while on this rotation and is off on the weekends. The night float takes all admissions and floor calls. Admissions range from the elusive “no hitter” to more than nine on a heavy night. There is always a back-up, usually a third-year resident, as well as an attending that will help at those especially busy times.

Call during the intern year varies greatly depending on rotation. Some rotations require no call. During those months, interns will usually fill in one to two nights per month on the weekend for the family medicine service. Conversely, some rotations have the traditional “Q 4” call for interns, such as labor and delivery, surgery, MICU and other responsibilities. Second year inpatient call is extremely limited. The second-year resident will occasionally serve as back-up call for interns on the Family Medicine Hospital Service. During the third year, there is virtually no inpatient call; however, the third-year resident will also serve as back-up call for junior residents on the Family Medicine Hospital Service approximately one week out of six.

Meals while on call at Scott & White are provided via a convenient meal charge account, alleviating concerns for carrying meal money while on call. Meals and trips to Darnall Hospital at Fort Hood are reimbursed at the end of the month

Noon Conference

Every Tuesday and Thursday during the noon hour, teaching conferences are presented for Family Medicine residents, interns, students and staff. A variety of topics relevant to Family Medicine are presented by specialists from all aspects within Scott & White. Each resident is required to present a case conference once a quarter during this time. The latest audiovisual technology is available in modern classrooms in the new Texas A&M Medical University building to facilitate conferences. Lunch is provided for these conferences, either by Scott & White dietary facilities or by representatives from pharmaceutical companies.
