Conferences

Attendance at conferences is required and residents are excused from clinical duties to attend.

Conferences occur on Thursday from 7 a.m. - noon. Residents will resume their duties immediately afterward. Conferences will consist of lectures given by the Emergency Medicine department faculty, Emergency Medicine residents, and guest speakers from within and outside of Scott & White.

Critical Care Lecture Series

EMR II and EMR III residents present two critical care lectures per year. The series provides a comprehensive review of various critical care management topics.

Toxicology Lecture Series (TLS)

EMR I residents present three toxicology lectures per year. TLS provides a comprehensive review of various toxicologic and pharmacologic topics.

Admissions and Follow-Up

Chief resident(s) and the administrative resident are assigned the task of informally following the progress of patients admitted to the hospital. They will review charts, discuss care with their physician counterparts and relay this information to the EM residents.

Given over assigned reading from Tintinalli, Rosen or Roberts & Hedges.

Journal Club/Research & Biostatistics

Residents and faculty critically review classic and recent literature pertinent to the practice of emergency medicine. Methods, research design, statistics, etc. of the articles will be assessed for quality and applicability. For this conference, evidence-based medicine style with a case-based approach is used. The conference is concluded by discussion of a topic on research design and statistics by faculty.

Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) Conference

Residents present complicated emergency department cases with potential or actual poor outcome and discuss dangerous conditions, practices and system problems. In addition, atypical presentations, differential diagnoses, evaluation problems encountered, common mistakes and unusual aspects of management of care are also discussed.

Ultrasound Conference

The ultrasound coordinator will give a short lecture followed by hands-on training with the ultrasound machine. This conference will alternate with the EMS conference.

EMS Conference

This conference is designed to discuss specific EMS issues related to the regional services covered by Scott & White. This conference will alternate with the ultrasound conference.

Interesting Case Conference

A faculty member reviews interesting cases encountered in the Emergency Department and provides an opportunity to review unusual cases and turn of hospital course.

EKG Conference

A faculty member reviews the basics of EKG interpretation and provides residents with an opportunity to review unusual and difficult EKG's.

Procedures Conference

This conference will allow for the opportunity to study and perform procedures that are performed in medical practice. The clinical simulator will also expose residents to different approaches in performing emergency medicine procedures. This conference will alternate with the Practice Based Learning conference.

Practice Based Learning Conference

This conference will share individual lessons learned on the PBL exercise with the entire residency and the basic principles of PBL will be learned. This conference will alternate with the Procedures Conference.

Year Directed Conference

Residents will be separated by PGY and faculty will lead small group discussions on topics related to the practice of Emergency Medicine which are not included in the core curriculum.

Physician Wellness Conference

Provides the residents with awareness in physician wellness issues and promotes camaraderie and fellowship. Faculty and guest faculty present lectures ranging in a variety of topics such as stress management, sleep and relaxation, physician impairment, financial issues and debt management, substance abuse, and work and the married physician. Some months will be devoted to activities of an aerobic nature such as sand volleyball, water sports, soccer, paintball, etc.

Core Content Lecture

Lectures delivered by the faculty, with special attention in areas emphasized on the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) written exam, will be reviewed every 18 months.

Simulated Patient Encounters

This conference prepares residents for the rigors of certification by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. This conference also provides residents with an opportunity to manage difficult cases in the security of the classroom.

Orientation Month

This month welcomes the EMR I residents to their new profession and introduces them to their new hospital. Lectures (first two weeks) are primarily directed towards resuscitation and common patient presentations, such as chest pain, vaginal bleeding and fever. Shifts will be worked.

Residents also have access to the entire spectrum of teaching conferences presented by other teaching programs at Scott & White--an offering of approximately 50 instructional hours each week.
