Didactic Program
Currently the didactic program is held four mornings per week. Lectures, conferences and seminars are from 6:45 a.m.– 7:30 a.m., allowing all residents and faculty to attend.
On Thursday mornings, the conference time is from 7 a.m.– 8 a.m. with a delayed operating room start in order to facilitate visiting professors and departmental conferences. A summary of the didactic program is as follows:
Faculty Lectures (two per week) - The ABA grid serves as the basis for the faculty lecture series (two per week) on the body organ systems with emphasis on clinical application.
Resident Lectures CA-III residents give some lectures during the year on topics chosen by the program director.
Faculty Seminars/Clinical Dilemmas (two per month) - These are case presentations held in a loose oral examination format by senior staff with emphasis on assessment and clinical management of difficult anesthesia problems.
Board Preparation Conference
(a) Written Examination (one per month)
Written Board questions are presented and topics discussed.
(b) Oral Examination (one per month)
A group oral examination is given in an unthreatening fashion to aid residents in preparation for the American Board Oral examination.
Resident Administrative Conference (one per month) - These are held monthly by the Program Director to encourage interchange with residents related to the "nuts and bolts" of the anesthesia program.
Quality Assurance Conference (two per month) - These conferences are designed for discussion of cases derived from anesthetic complications with senior staff and anesthesia residents when they have been involved in care of the patient.
Journal Club (one per month) - In an informal setting each person attending the meeting is encouraged to present a summary of a recent journal article or a recently attended medical meeting.
Core Curriculum Exams - These are held for residents during the CA-I year with the goal of improving basic knowledge in anesthesia in the early training years.
Anesthesia Knowledge Tests These multiple choice tests are given during the first six months of the CA-I year to aid in evaluation of the resident's program early in training.
An additional AKT examination will be administered after 18 months of clinical anesthesia training.
Practice Oral Examinations - Each resident receives two practice oral exams per year during the clinical anesthesia years in preparation for the ABA certification examinations.
