Maternal and Fetal Medicine
Scott & White serves as a primary referral facility for the surrounding 21 counties of the Texas Health Department Region Six. Approximately 150 mothers were referred for acute care during the last academic year, in addition to approximately 50 referred from Scott & White physicians in 15 satellite clinics in the surrounding counties.
The Neonatal Unit attracts an additional 150 infants in transport each year. This unit of 30 bassinets has an occupancy rate of over 90 percent. An additional 600 high-risk patients per year come from Scott & White high-risk clinics.
The Antenatal Testing Unit is adjacent to both the Labor and Delivery Unit and the resident staff clinic. The Antenatal Testing Unit contains two state of the art ultrasound machines, two FHR monitoring beds and is staffed by full-time technicians. Steve Allen M.D., boarded in OB/GYN and Maternal Fetal Medicine, and Kevin Huddleston M.D., boarded in OB/GYN, provide consultative services which include ultrasound consultation, genetic counseling and diagnosis, amniocentesis and cordocenteses. In the last year, 195 amniocentesis for genetic diagnosis, 1,700 ultrasound exams, 2,971 nonstress tests and 198 biophysical profiles were performed.
Scott & White is a Level III facility, with perinatal and neonatal services and consultative subspecialists appropriate to that designation.
The Section provides education for residents and medical students through the Texas A&M University System Health Science Center.
Unique clinical services include Couplet Care for our normal parents. Babies are never separated from mothers and fathers. The father can stay with the new mother and baby throughout hospitalization. In addition to peripartum management the Labor and Delivery Unit staff is available "around the clock" by telephone or in person to assist patients with pregnancy or postpartum problems, including lactation counseling. The Scott & White Department of Anesthesia provides continuous obstetrical anesthesia services, including epidural anesthesia for labor and delivery.
