Grants and Research

Various Tem-Bel Health & Wellness Coalition partners have submitted grant applications for, or are participating in, research related to childhood obesity.

School Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN). In collaboration with the Bell County Health District, the coalition submitted an application and was selected to participate in the statewide School Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN) surveillance for Bell County. The 2005 SPAN surveillance began in January 2005 and will be completed in May 2005.

Physical Education Program (PEP). Belton Independent School District received the Physical Education Program (PEP) grant. This three-year grant funds education for school physical education staff and purchases school equipment.

We Can

Healthy Weight Initiative: We Can! (Ways to Enhance Children's Activity & Nutrition)
The Children's Hospital at Scott & White was selected by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute as one of 13 national sites to implement We Can! This program is scheduled for implementation June 2005-June 2006.

Obesity research data collection. In May 2004, the coalition conducted a trial data collection at Leon Heights Elementary School in Belton. BMI calculations and height, weight and skin fold measurements were taken for 58 third graders. This trial data collection was done as a preliminary assessment of the children in our community.

Texas Department of Agriculture pilot study. The Texas Department of Agriculture funded a joint study between The Children’s Hospital at Scott & White and Baylor College of Medicine. The study assesses how the new school nutrition guidelines affect fourth grade students and parental satisfaction with school food choices. Secondary aims include monitoring quality of life for the students and obtaining baseline BMI data on fourth graders in Bell County and Fort Bend County. This study began in January 2005 and will be completed in May 2005.
