Transformations:

How Transplantation Changes Lives

Cindy (right) kidney recipient, with her donor and sister, Janis.

When Cindy was hospitalized for complete kidney failure, she finally took her sister Janis's life-saving offer of kidney donation seriously. Packing their matching bags for their trip to Scott & White, they pretended they were going to camp.

Cindy is so thankful every day for her sister's precious gift, that she wrote her this poem:

Our Kidney

Your kidney you gave me saved my life,
before I had it, I had much strife.
But now that I do I'm doing quite well,
due to my sister and I will live to tell!
How grateful I am that you did what you did,
The battle for life has been fought for and won.
So thankful am I, I have you on my team…
Perfect match was only a miracle in a dream.
I admire you greatly for your courage and love.
And surely my sister, was sent from up above.

Connie, Scott & White nurse.

Nursing is her passion and Labor and Delivery is her calling.

Witnessing the miracle of life as a part of her daily life, Connie had no idea her own life was in danger. She had always thought of herself as very healthy until one day she realized she needed a kidney transplant to save her life.

Hoping for a match, she turned to her eight siblings, and right away her youngest brother on active military duty answered her call to action.

LaRon

After 4½ years on dialysis, LaRon received the call he had been waiting for. Dr. Jaffers, his surgeon, called him personally to ask if he wanted it.

Now, LaRon has dedicated his life to taking care of the precious gift he has received. He promised he would do everything he had to do to keep his new kidney functioning. He doesn't want to let anyone down…especially himself.

Paul

When Paul Mata of Pflugerville was diagnosed with end stage renal disease, he could barely stay awake in front of the TV and cutting the grass had become a chore. Since coming to Scott & White for a kidney transplant, Paul has gotten his life and energy back.

The care he received from his transplant team has convinced him the journey up I-35 is worth the time, rather than continuing his treatment at a closer Austin hospital.
