Frequently Asked Questions

Q - How do I get started?
A - Attend a free lecture given periodically by Dr. Symmonds or Dr. Rodriguez. Call 254-724-2397 for lecture dates and times.

Q - What information do I bring to the lecture?
A - Bring a copy of your Primary Care Provider's (PCP) referral, your medical insurance information, and note-taking materials (pen and paper).

Q - How do I find out about coverage of my insurance carrier?
A - Contact the Scott & White Bariatric Financial Counselor by phone at 254-724-2809 or by e-mail at mlowery@swmail.sw.org.

Q - How long after the procedure will it take to get my weight off?
A - The most rapid weight loss is in the first six months. However, weight loss can continue longer as long as the four rules are followed closely.

Q - What are the four rules?
A - The four rules are:

  • Protein first with each meal
  • Water only between meals
  • No Snacking
  • Exercise 60 minutes every day (seven times a week)

Q - Can I drink anything besides water between meals (ie. diet drinks)?
A
- Short Answer – NO
Long Answer – Any drink between meals that is sweet (even via artificial sweeteners) is the beginning of cheating. You will be given more information when you attend the free lecture (see question #1).

Q - How often are follow ups required after the procedure?
A
- After the first six weeks you are seen at three months, six months and 12 months postoperatively.

Q - What about my medicines I take now?
A
- There are some medications you should stop five days before surgery such as aspirin, ibuprofen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). All diuretics (water pills) should be stopped three days before surgery. No female hormones or birth control pills two weeks before surgery. No Plavix for two weeks before surgery.

Q - How long before I can begin swallowing my pills?
A
- Two months

Q - What do I do for constipation?
A
- Two tablespoons of Milk of Magnesia, one to two times a day until relief.

Q - How and where do I attend the support group meetings?
A
- Once your surgery is scheduled you are expected to begin attending support group meetings at least every month.
