Pharmacy-Coordinated Research and Investigational Drug Service - (IDS)
The Department of Pharmacy Services participates and supports research endeavors in various ways throughout the department.
The basic goal of the service is to ensure that investigational drug studies and similar clinical research studies involving marketed drugs in the hospital or clinic are carried out safely, effectively and efficiently. Pharmacy is also involved in writing protocols and conducting research.
Our functions include:
- Distribution and control of study drugs
- Procurement, storage and inventory control and coordination of ordering
- Preparation compounding dispensing, control, randomization, blinding documentation
- Disposal/disposition of unused drugs
- Preparation of policies and guides
- Preparation of budget
- Drug accountability logs
- Preparation of dispensing records
- Obtain investigators drug order; provides incompatibility checks/packaging requirements
- Delivery of study medications
- Clinical Service
- Preparation of policies and procedures
- Education of Pharmacy staff
- Preparation of information sheets
- Monitoring
- Assure adherence to JCAHO, FDA and other regulatory agencies
- Research activities
- Preparation and review of research proposals
- Collection of data
- Participation in Institution Review Board, Institution Review Committee and Effectiveness Registry
- Initiates and conducts appropriate research studies of its own
