Q&A with Dr. Rowe

Dr. Mark S. Rowe

The longer I practice, the more I realize what a privilege it is to care for my patients.

Why did you decide to become an Ob/Gyn?

For me, Ob/Gyn was the right combination of basic science of reproductive medicine and the clinical practice of medicine. The science that forms the basis for the specialty is intellectually stimulating and the patient relationships are personally satisfying. No other specialty provides for such a varied practice experience. In addition, I was strongly attracted to Ob/Gyn by the outstanding people in the field who are truly dedicated in their desire to advance women's care.

What inspires you about your work as an Ob/Gyn?

What could be more exciting than looking back over a generation of deliveries? I have had the opportunity to bring many new lives into the world and have on occasion seen some back as "grown-up patients." The longer I practice, the more I realize what a privilege it is to care for my patients.

What are some of the most important things you feel a patient needs above and beyond standard care?

I believe my patients desire an empathetic physician who genuinely cares for them – one who offers sound medical recommendations and who delivers care honestly, attentively and competently. I believe that the patient has to be a partner in her care. She needs up-to-date information delivered in an unbiased fashion to be able to make an informed decision and/or wise choices in regards to her healthcare.

Why do you feel it is important to build relationships with your patients and give personalized care?

Building relationships lead to trust which is an important bond between the doctor and patient. This bond is essential in providing high-quality care especially when the physician must see his patient through difficult times.

What led you to practice at Scott & White? What benefits do you feel you can offer patients at Scott & White that would not be available in other practice settings?

I believe that the best medicine leading to optimal patient care is practiced in a team setting alongside quality professionals. Such a setting inspires one to maintain clinical competence and skills. It also allows for professional growth and development of personal interests that can have a direct impact on improving patient care.
