Volunteer Opportunities
![]() |
| "Finding out about Mom's terminal illness was the most difficult time in our lives. The caring volunteers at Scott & White Hospice were there weekly to assist us in our journey. They helped us find courage in the face of uncertainty and to embrace the miracles of everyday." |
Hospice volunteers come in all ages and from all backgrounds. They have a rich variety of cultural, social and professional backgrounds. Applicants should be in good physical health, emotionally mature, stable, non-judgmental and have a sincere desire to serve. Volunteers serve the Scott & White Hospice either by working directly with patients and their loved ones or by helping in other areas where direct patient contact is not necessary.
Volunteer opportunities include:
Special Skills: These volunteers provide valuable services such as helping in the office and special events. Work is normally scheduled between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on weekdays at the Scott & White Hospice's administrative offices located at 5701 Airport Rd., Temple, Texas. A brief orientation and job-specific training is required. Training is scheduled on an individual basis. There is no minimum commitment. Volunteers may serve on a one-time, limited project or may assist on a regular, on-going basis. Hours vary by assignment.
Bereavement: These volunteers provide services to surviving loved ones of patients who were under the care of Scott & White Hospice. They may write letters of support and friendship to loved ones, telephone or serve as outreach contacts.
Once trained, bereavement volunteers work from their own homes, in the survivor's home or in Scott & White Hospice office. Training varies depending on type of bereavement service they provide. Training is provided several times each year.
Patient care: These volunteers visit patients at home or in nursing facilities to give emotional support and to provide welcome respite. Activities may include reading to the patient, assisting with a hobby or simply listening. Volunteers who visit patients at home may also help by running errands, shopping for groceries or delivering supplies.
Specialty services: Specialty volunteers provide service to patients, including hair cutting, notary and massage therapy. Specialty volunteers must be appropriately licensed or certified.
Training required for patient care and specialty services: 30 hour Patient Care Volunteer training.
Time Commitment: One year minimum commitment. Volunteers give up to four hours of service each week as assigned.
