Research

All residents are required to participate in a "scholarly activity," a research project with a senior staff physician or a basic science project. These efforts are assisted by the project mentors and an active multi-specialty research mentors committee.

Internal Medicine Research Day

12 Annual Internal Medicine Research DayResidents present their projects as posters or talks during the annual Internal Medicine Research Day in May. Awards are given for the top presenters. The day also includes a visit and talk from a visiting professor. Residents are encouraged to submit their work for publication and presentation at scientific meetings. Residents receive excellent support for data analysis from biostatistics and from biomedical communications with assistance in preparation of posters or manuscripts.

The Scott & White Foundation also supports residents' research with internal funding for projects. The research curriculum includes several didactic sessions on the approach to a project, grant writing and IRB (Institutional Review Board) submission, use of the computerized medical record, and research ethics.

Residents are allowed to use elective time to work on their projects. Residents typically plan their study during the early part of the second year and complete the project during the third year. Opportunities for bench research are available through the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI).

The CVRI is a joint effort of The Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine, Scott & White and the Central Texas Veteran's Health Care System. This unique program pairs world class research by molecular biologists with clinical applications to improve treatment for people suffering from cardiovascular disease or stroke. By discovering better strategies for prevention and intervention, the work of the institute will benefit patients and the entire community.
