Orthopedics and Scoliosis
Children have unique problems and conditions related to their growing bones. The Children's Hospital specialists in pediatric orthopedics know how to treat fractures and abnormalities to insure proper growth. Bone tumors and cancer in children requires a specialist (orthopedic oncologists) to insure a cure and provide the best functional result.
There are several divisions of Pediatric Orthopedics.
- The Division of Pediatric Orthopedics and Scoliosis evaluates and treats congenital, developmental and musculoskeletal disease including musculoskeletal trauma. Common problems are clubfeet, toeing in or out, bowlegs and knock-knees, cerebral palsy and scoliosis. In addition to general pediatric orthopedics there are sub-specialty clinics in scoliosis and multispecialty clinics in cerebral palsy and spinal bifida. The multi-specialty clinics are a multi-specialty team effort and include in addition to orthopedics, rehabilitation, urology and pediatric neurosurgery as required.
- The Division of Orthopedic Bone Tumor Surgery uses a team approach for the management of benign and malignant bones and soft tissue tumors of the extremities in pediatric patients. This includes evaluation with radiographs including CAT or MRI scans when necessary and Interventional Radiology or operations to obtain biopsy or remove bone tumors.
- The Division of Orthopedics Hand Surgery treats birth defects and injuries to the hand.
