Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
Senior pediatric staff physicians specially trained to treat critically ill children supervise every aspect of care at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Scott & White. With a commitment to providing comprehensive, personalized care for each patient, PICU physicians work directly within a multidisciplinary staff that includes PICU nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacy services, unit clerks, social workers, chaplains, dieticians, child life professionals, resident physicians and medical students.
Mission
To provide an organized system of pediatric services led by Pediatric Critical Care Physicians to care for the needs of critically ill or unstable pediatric patients in Central Texas.
Goals
- Intercede early in the disease process to prevent morbidity and mortality as much as possible.
- Provide PICU care in a family-based care atmosphere.
- Train medical professionals in the skills necessary to stabilize and manage critically ill children.
- Provide a transport team trained in the stabilization of pediatric patients.
- Maintain the status of the PICU at Scott & White within the guidelines established by the Society of Critical Care Medicine and American Academy of Pediatrics (SCCM and AAP).

Physicians may call Scott & White's Physician Relations at 800-792-3368 or 254-724-2218 to refer a patient by phone.
Physician Relations will connect you with the referring physician, who will provide management support over the phone and arrange appropriate transport.
Scott & White's critical care air and ground transport are staffed by an Air and Surface Transport R.N. and a Critical Care Paramedic.
