Since 2001, patients in the Killeen area have been able to save time and gas money by receiving their cancer treatment and blood work at the Killeen center. Built to give patients outside of Temple easier access to cancer care, the Killeen center has most of the treatment options found in Temple, but much closer to home.

“Our state-of-the-art facility in Killeen makes it very convenient for our patients to come to the clinic and receive radiation and medical oncology care on the same day,” says Lute Oas, M.D., a radiation oncologist at the Scott & White Cancer Center in Killeen.

With full-time medical and radiation oncologists on staff, the center is equipped with cutting-edge technology for radiation therapy, chemotherapy, blood transfusions and injections.

Patient comfort in mind
Built with patient comfort in mind, the center combines a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere with high-tech, life-saving equipment.

“Our 20 adjustable chemotherapy chairs have television sets available so the patients can relax and have some distraction from their treatment,” says Theresa Kelly, RN, ONC, nursing care supervisor, hematology/oncology. “We have a simulator that assists us in pinpointing exactly what areas we need to treat; therefore, minimizing radiation exposure to healthy tissue.”

Coordinated care
The technology also helps link the Killeen center to the main facility in Temple, where physicians can view results of tests and treatments almost immediately.

“This facility allows us to offer excellent coordination of care for the patient,” Dr. Oas says. “We can provide them with almost everything they need at this facility, but we also are in constant contact with Temple for further consultations.”

With physicians at the center specializing in both medical and radiation oncology, patients are able to have the full spectrum of treatment closer to their homes. With patients coming not only from the Killeen area but as far away as Lampasas, San Saba and Lometa, the Killeen facility provides expert care in a relaxing environment.
