Division of General Internal Medicine, Temple
Three groups of physicians (Community Internal Medicine, General Internal Medicine and Santa Fe Internal Medicine) previously in different locations have joined efforts to deliver care for diseases of adults in the Center for Diagnostic Medicine.
All our internists are board certified in internal medicine and specialize in the care of adults. Their major role is to provide integrated care for diseases of several organ systems including:
- Heart
- Lungs
- Digestive system
- Kidneys
- Joints
- Endocrine glands
- Psychiatry
Only when the complexity of the illness so requires they refer to subspecialists and coordinate the care with them. They also provide:
- Preoperative evaluation of risk
- Health maintenance examinations such as PAP smears, breast and prostate exams
- Immunizations and periodic screening measures for osteoporosis, breast, colon and prostate cancer
- Long-term management of cardiovascular risk factors (including hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol problems, obesity and smoking) to reduce the risks for heart attack, stroke and death
Services for Out-of-State and International Patients
Some of these physicians have designed their practices to serve the needs of patients who travel from afar (neighboring states and Mexico) to come to Scott and White. They anticipate their needs and coordinate an extensive workup which is conducted over a very short period to limit inconvenience and cost to the patient.
Other members of our staff are fluent in Spanish and are able to conduct the entire episode of medical care in this language.
In-house lab and radiology services and a drive-in pharmacy
The Center for Diagnostic Medicine has laboratory and basic radiology services precluding the need for travel to the main campus, except for the most sophisticated tests.
There is also a drive-in pharmacy on site and our pharmacists participate in medical care by staffing a Medication Management Clinic, which gives particular emphasis to diabetes care, but also deals with blood pressure and cholesterol problems.
Once you are a patient of the Center, your prescription refills are handled by a special office staffed by a pharmacist who verifies the accuracy of the request and processes it expeditiously.
The doctors of the Division of General Internal Medicine take pride in teaching medical students and resident doctors on the hospital wards and in the clinic. They also participate in several areas of medical research carried out at Scott and White.
